Baselworld 2017: Corum unveils a new ladies watch, the Lady Golden Bridge Round.
Corum is one of the rare brands to possess several iconic watches within its collection. The brand is well known for its singular and recognizable models, offering a large diversity in its design and mechanical complications as perfectly illustrated with the Golden Bridge and the famous Bubble models.
The Golden Bridge, an icon of high horology, remains the first and only watch to feature a mechanical “baguette” movement suspended by a single bridge. Naturally, it was inspired by the famous Golden Bridge in San Francisco. Proudly displaying its original character since 1980, this highly horological timepiece was initially presented in a “tonneau” shaped case with transparent sides enabling a 360º view of its movement.
In 2016, Corum reinterpreted the Golden Bridge and proposed a more conventional 43mm round version to house its legendary “baguette” movement. After these initial steps of the Golden Bridge Round, Corum decided this year to offer a feminine declination of this model. The Lady Golden Bridge Round reveals its voluptuous curves in a 39mm case.
A cocktail of diamonds, Art Deco architecture and precision mechanics
This watch is particularly interesting for its horological specificity and the particularity of its movement. But above all, it treats us to a very pleasant visual spectacle: dancing geometrical shapes beautifully combine with a horizontal movement, itself housed in a round-shaped case. Two diamond-set bridges encircle the main bridge from which is suspended the 18ct. gold “baguette” movement. Two half-circles of coloured natural resin (no, this is not emerald) offer an elegant openwork to better suggest the elements dedicated to the reading of time, the baton indexes and Roman numerals positioned at 12 and 6 o’clock. If we look at the heads side of the watch (indeed, there is no real dial due to the transparency effect), it is decorated using Art Déco aesthetic codes, merging geometry and diamond setting, and hence creating a meticulous blend that further reinforces the aerial impression provided by the watch. Since this is a Golden Bridge, the movement had to remain visible at 360º. Last but not least, a total of 76 round-cut diamonds sparkle all over the pink gold case.
Though a size generally seen as rather large for a ladies watch, its 39mm case appears perfectly proportioned in the present case. The Lady Golden Bridge Round is an elegant watch, with character, absolutely not oversized, and with specially designed lugs that hug the curves of your wrist. On the back, the triple-folding clasp offers a greater comfort than the traditional pin buckles as it firmly and homogeneously positions the case on the wrist whilst offering a very elegant touch.
This timepiece obviously comes as an answer to the current female demand for rather large (on the feminine scale) jewellery watches featuring a real horological movement. Its adaptability (as long as you can afford it) will easily enable us to wear it in the daylight with a pair of jeans, but when the time comes, obviously also in a gorgeous evening dress. Its traditional round shape does not remove any of its originality.
This stunning piece is available in a total of six different declinations (three in pink gold and three in white gold) offering a variety of colour options. Also, do not miss the “rainbow” version, which displays a bezel delicately decorated with a rainbow of precious stones.
I must nevertheless question the pertinence of including a manual winding mechanism for this watch. In my eyes, and despite the horizontal bridge that might complicate things a little, an automatic winding movement would have brought additional practicality.
Whereas some ladies might lovingly wind their watch on a daily basis (considering the power reserve of about 40 hours) using the crown positioned at 3 o’clock, the less brave might decide to keep it aside for special events only. What a shame…for its water resistance to 30 meters could have made of this Lady Golden Bridge Round an ideal companion for an everyday use, even for holidays down by the sea!
